Question...

My experience with car dealerships' parts departments is that generally (and I know that there are exceptions when there's a run on a particular thing, or it's some obscure part) they can get most parts in 24 hours or so. Some can come in the same day, some you have to wait a couple of days for.

Is that y'alls experience also?

Newer cars? Yeah. Older cars? Weeks sometimes.

Oh, yeah. I'm not talking about the alternator belt for a 1982 BMW. I'm talking bodywork mechanical bits for a 2014 Honda.

If it's a common part available at the warehouse, I get them next day. For my Volvo section, we also get things next day but our competitors get all orders on Thursday. At the end, it depends on the dealers order system (stock order only or allow next day) and the overall availability of the part (common item or one off special edition item from 1988 are tricky)

Yeah, should be quick. If not in a huge rush though, you might want to check out rockauto. Their website is a bit old school, but in my experience, they have a better selection than anyone and unbeatable prices. Most OEM equipment that isn't car-specific like a body panel or engine mount isn't actually made by the car manufacturer, so as long as you're getting it from a reputable company it should be okay. I usually aim for Beck/Arnley parts, and have been surprised more often than not to find that it's the exact same part as the original Toyota part I took out.

OK, here's where I am: 2014 Honda Odyssey with a broken door actuator. They got one (the last one took about 1 day to get) but it was defective. Picked up the car on the 13th and was told "Parts should be in on Tuesday, we'll give you a call." Never got a call. Called *them* yesterday.... and they said "Parts are here, well, actually they'll be here tomorrow".

My gut says they never ordered the part and called the warehouse when I called them. Thoughts?

At our US shops, 90%+ of parts are there overnight and 98% are there within 48hrs. Honda has one of the best parts supply chains in the business, so you'll get them damn quick, if not same day.

I will give it to BMW on this one, in all of my experience no matter how bizarre the part, 48 hours or less. They even overnighted a box of points, cap and rotor for my 3.os when I was stranded at the wrong end of kansas

For me it has always been same or next day, or me running to a different dealer in town to get it same day.

Only exception was a national back order item that I ended up lucking out and finding at a dealer in Vegas while I was on holiday

Depends on the shop. Years ago, my dad needed a new fairing for his motorcycle. He called the dealer, who said that it would take at least two weeks to arrive and they couldn't guarantee a color. He then called a local family-run garage, who said "Alright, we can have it in by tomorrow morning. Which color would you like?"

I work at a dealership that combines GM, Subaru, and Hyundai. The issue is where we are isn't a large town and we are far from the closest warehouses. So for GM, we can get parts usually next day as long as parts are in the Los Angles warehouse, if not, it could take up to 4+ days if its in Michigan and the customer doesn't want to pay the freight to get it here quicker. As for Subaru, it was that we only had a Portland warehouse so ordered parts would take 3 day, longer if coming from else where. Now they have a ware house in LA so its only 2 days to get parts from them. Recently they allowed us to send orders for parts everyday like GM. Now Hyundai is screwy! They have a warehouse in LA, but we only can send stock orders Monday for Wednesday and Wednesday for Friday. So you want to order a part of Thursday, with out ordering faster, we wont get it till Wednesday of next week because that will make it on Monday's stock order.... Yeah three lines makes it fun!

except when Audi don't have in warehouse and has to come from Singapore (1 week , or Germany 2 weeks)

Subaru (3 weeks ex japan)

or Holden (generally if available from GM Korea/Opel Germany 4 weeks)

or if locally built Commodore parts you're at the mercy of their supplier!

you can be waiting quite sometime occasionally
